Onsite Sewage System Maintenance
Mathews Soil Consultants, Inc.

Soyou have a septic system. Congratulations..you are now a wastewater treatment plant operator! What?!That's right, you own and operate one of the most ingenious disposal systems known to man. And, it happens right in your backyard, "onsite", whether you realize it or not.

A septic system is a machine (like a car)and to keep it running properly you have to take care of it. Without proper operation and maintenance, the risk of failure is high. Failure can mean sewage on the ground surface, into a roadside ditch, or worse yet, into your own home or business. Pollution of ground water is also a threat of malfunctioning onsite systems. All of these situations represent a danger to public health and the environment, and that's why the Commonwealth considers it a crime to discharge sewageimproperly.

As the owner of an onsite system, you havethe responsibility to operate and maintain your system within state regulations, local ordinances, permit requirements, and manufacturer’s recommendations.

This can be overwhelming foronsite owners, considering the multitude of systems installed and system/permit requirements. Because onsite systems range from the simple to the complex, it’s important to have a reliable, experienced service provider to evaluate your system and recommend a maintenance program.

Puraflo Systems

The following images show a properly functioning Puraflo Rod and the common problem with this system. Homeowner cost to replace the peat may be as high as $2,000 per pod. MSCI recommends the homeowners explore the option of replacing this system with a non-biodegradable product. This can result in long-term cost saving.

Pod with Adequate Peat Moss Level and Quality

This shows properly maintained peat moss in the pods.
Pod with Poor Peat Moss Level and Quality

The peat in this pod has either been abused or is at the end of its life cycle and needs to be replaced.
Ecoflo
Often, Ecoflo treatment systems with fiberglass containment structures are often subject to severe damage. These cracked, fiberglass shells are not reparable and must be replaced at a high cost to the owner. Replacement cost with a more biodegradable treatment system will range from $9,000 to $15,000.

Many fiberglass pods we examine have cracks near the vent ports. Some are smaller than these but have the same general pattern.
Surface water can enter the treatment pod through this hole and flood the peat. Cracks such as this also allow untreated sewage into the groundwater environment.
