So you have a septic system. Congratulations..you are now a wastewater treatment plant operator! What?! That's
right, you own and operate one of the most ingenious disposal systems known to man. And, it happens right in your backyard,
"onsite", whether you realize it or not.
A septic system is a machine (like a car) and to
keep it running properly you have to take care of it. Without proper operation and maintenance, the risk of
failure is high. Failure can mean sewage on the ground surface, into a roadside ditch, or worse yet, into your
own home or business. Pollution of ground water is also a threat of malfunctioning onsite systems. All of these
situations represent a danger to public health and the environment, and that's why the Commonwealth considers it a crime to
discharge sewage improperly.
As the owner of an onsite system, you have the responsibility to operate
and maintain your system within state regulations, local ordinances, permit requirements, and manufacturer’s recommendations.
This can be overwhelming for onsite owners, considering the multitude of systems installed and system/permit
requirements. Because onsite systems range from the simple to the complex, it’s important to have a reliable, experienced
service provider to evaluate your system and recommend a maintenance program.
